College Counseling

College Counseling

As part of Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee’s college counseling program, our staff coordinates college visits to the Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee campus, facilitates student visits to local college fairs, and can provide information on religious vocations and orders. We lead student and parent information sessions throughout the year and meet with each student individually. We guide students and their families through the admissions testing, college and financial aid application processes and assist each family in strategically selecting the best options for the student, based on student and family goals and financial considerations. This service is provided by Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee at no cost to our families.

Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee students receive this interactive instruction throughout the school year, mainly built into their school days. Topics are selected to inspire students about potential vocations, colleges and careers, and very importantly, to build financial literacy. To give you an idea of the topics covered during college advising classes and seminars, the following were covered during the 2017/18 school year:

  • Goal setting
  • Budgeting exercise
  • Paying for college – grants, types of loans, interest rates
  • Completing the Common App Activities List
  • Searching for colleges
  • Visits by college admissions representatives
  • Speakers on Student Seminar Days
    • Vocations talks by Fr. Luke Strand and two religious sisters
    • Career talks by pathologist, engineer, German teacher, two CEOs, architect
    • Catholic musician – beauty of the arts and using talents to glorify God
    • Faith Formation Director – centering our life on Christ
    • Faith and science in biomedical research

Parent feedback from our evening College Info Night presentation for parents and students:” Thank you for inviting me to the presentation.  So much to know, but you presented everything so clearly.”” Thank you for sharing your wealth of college application knowledge with us! I wish I had known this 20 years ago! But it is very useful now.”

College Visits

Chesterton Academy of Milwaukee hosts colleges and universities for campus visits throughout the academic year. If you are a college admissions representative and would like to visit our school, please know that we typically schedule visits during the lunch hour. Please contact dbranecky@chestertonmke.org to schedule a visit.

College Admissions Testing

We provide information to our students on the PSAT, SAT, ACT and the new CLT (Classic Learning Test).  Chesterton Academy of Milwaukeee is an official testing site for the CLT.  The Classical Learning Test (CLT) is an alternative to the SAT and ACT college admissions tests and is accepted by a growing number of excellent colleges and universities. While the SAT and ACT have been brought into alignment with Common Core standards, the CLT assesses students’ verbal reasoning, grammar/writing, and quantitative reasoning skills drawing from the works of the greatest minds in the history of Western thought. The CLT is endorsed by the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Association of Classical Christian Schools, Home School Legal Defense Association, The National Home Education Research Institute, and others. Learn more here.
